Summer Reading Season!!! (With Giveaway)

Update: The winner of the gift card is…reginamayross. Congrats!!!

I am so excited–the summer reading season is almost here!!

People get to sit and relax on the beach…and read.

People can sway in a hammock…and read.

TV shows will be in re-run land (quite often), so people can turn off the TV…and read.

Can you tell that I anticipate a lot of reading time in my summer future?

And I love that! Summer is my chance to catch up on some much needed reading. Though, to be completely honest, I have been sneaking in a few reads over the last month. I’ve enjoyed some truly stellar books that I wanted to share with you today.

First up, Sylvia Day’s BARED TO YOU.

This book is emotional and sexy, and I cannot wait for the next installment in the series!

Next up, well, something a wee bit different…MINDHUNTER.

What can I say? I enjoy variety in my books. Which probably explains why my next fave read is YA…I HUNT KILLERS.

I HUNT KILLERS grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go.  A stellar read about a teenager who may just be following in the footsteps of his serial killer father…or maybe he isn’t. 😉 Why don’t yo read the book to find out for sure?

Those are a few of the books that have really stayed with me after I read them. What favorite books would you like to share? Or are there some books that you are really looking forward to reading this summer?  Let me know–one commenter will win a $10 gift card.

Happy Reading! And have a great summer reading season!

Hero Up!!

I saw THE AVENGERS over the weekend. Oh. Wow. I don’t know that words can express just how much I loved that movie. It had it all. Action. Adventure. Sexy men (and a sexy lady) saving the day. Good times. A giant hulk. Thor.

What I loved most about the movie was that all of the heroes were so distinct.

Ironman is the guy with all of the catchy comebacks. He’s a playboy (somewhat reformed now that he’s with his lady). You know he’ll jump right in, not really stopping to think about caution. He’s the wild one.

Then there’s Captain America. Always playing by the rules. Being the “good” guy. I’m not sure he even knows what a playboy is. He talks with respect to ladies, he follows a strong code of honor, and he’s the old-fashioned type.

Next up? Thor. His speech is formal, sometimes confused, but he’s big, he’s sexy, and he could tell me anything, and I’d be excited. 😉 Thor has strong ties to family. He’s a warrior who enjoys a good time, and he laughs at battle. A little crazy, maybe? But he’s crazy cool.

Then we have Bruce Banner. In Bruce form, he’s a bit reserved, quiet, withdrawn. He’s smart, but not flashy. Kind of a nerd type. But when he gets angry…then he’s a giant beast who likes to smash things. And is anything wrong with a good smashing time?

These were my four favorite heroes from the movie. Sure, there are plenty of other heroes that I enjoy (Superman springs immediately to mind), but I’m curious…which heroes do you like? What makes them so special for you?

The Raven

“Once upon a midnight dreary

While I pondered, weak and weary…”

When I was a senior in high school, I had to memorize THE RAVEN. Since I am a huge, CRAZY Edgar Allan Poe fan, this wasn’t exactly a hardship for me. And, yes, I still remember too many of the lines, and I drive my husband insane when I start to quote them.

And I’m quoting them a lot right now because…THE RAVEN will be in theaters on Friday. YES!!!!! A movie about Poe! A movie in which Poe is tracking a killer.  I cannot wait.  Serial killers and Poe–that’s a combination that I’ll never be able to pass up. And, just in case you haven’t seen the preview, I wanted to come by today and share this with you…

Have a great day!

My favorite villains of all time…

A few weeks ago, I presented a workshop at the Silken Sands Writers’ Conference–it was on crafting killers (making villains to chill and thrill!). I loved doing this workshop because it let me explore some very dark characters–and it also gave me a chance to share a great deal of information that I’d gathered regarding serial killers.

But, a fun aspect of the workshop…I was able to talk about some of my favorite villains. Those bad guys that just grab hold of you and don’t let go.  You know the bad guys I’m talking about. The ones we love to hate.  😉

It turns out that the American Film Institute made a top 50 list of the best villains out there (well, villains in films, anyway).  Here are the top five that made their list:

1. Dr. Hannibal Lecter

2. Norman Bates

3. Darth Vader

4. The Wicked Witch of the West

5. Nurse Ratched

From this top 5 list, I’ll say that I totally agree with Hannibal Lecter being #1. I mean, wow–that guy was scary. But, he was actually more than just scary. His character developed and transformed and became a serious anti-hero by the time Hannibal was released, and when Hannibal Rising came out, folks in the theater were actually cheering Lecter on as he killed.

I also am a big fan of Darth Vader. Come on–talk about your backstory power!  This guy went from good to bad to good. He lost his mother, his wife, his children. He was wicked. He was feared.  And he sacrificed his life for Luke in the end. I love me some Vader. 😉

But my top 5 list wouldn’t include the other 3 folks. (Sorry, AFI!).  Here’s what my top five list would look like:

1. Dr. Hannibal Lecter

2. Darth Vader

3. Freddy Kreuger (Yes, he was burned and flat-out crazy, but he was a killer with a sense of humor, and, big for me–he had a great backstory)

4.  The Mummy (From all the Mummy flicks with Brendan Fraser).  Sure, the guy was bad, but he was bad for love.  And a villain that fights death for love–definitely going to rank on my favorite list.

5.  Annie Wilkes (Misery) – I couldn’t let the guys have all the fun. Women can make for some wonderfully dark and complex villains, too.  And being locked up as someone broke your ankles and forced you to write–um, yes, that is kind of a writer’s nightmare.

But what about you?  What characters would make your top five list of the best villains out there?  And why?

How do you relax?

When it’s time for me to relax, I like to curl up with a good book. I get lost in the story and forget all about my troubles and the petty problems of the day.

Or, I can get lost in a good TV show (both Castle and The Vampire Diaries immediately spring to mind!).  It’s so easy to get caught up in the action and the suspense–and the romance.  A great way to relax.

We all need time to relax. Time to just let work slide a bit as we take a deep breath…and take it easy.  Whether it’s five minutes that we spend swaying on a hammock or an hour that we spend reading a good book, that time is important. It renews us, energizes us.

This may sound odd, but one of my favorite ways to relax is watching a horror movie.  I know, I know–weird. But the adrenaline rush that I get while I watch–when I scream then laugh at myself–that’s great.  I forget everything but the movie for a few minutes, and it sure is fun.

But what about you?  What’s your favorite way to relax?

Conference Shout-Out

Today, I wanted to give a shout-out to the upcoming (March 16-18) Silken Sands Writers’ Conference. This conference is put on by my local RWA Chapter, so it’s very near and dear to my heart.

And, um, did I mention that it’s held directly on beautiful Pensacola Beach?  You can see the waves crashing from your room. You can see dolphins swimming in the morning. Awesome.

There’s  a great line-up of speakers and agents for this conference, including fantastic folks like Barbara Vey of Publishers Weekly, Angela James (Carina Press), Holly Blanck (St. Martin’s), Jenny Bent (of the Bent Agency), and Lucienne Diver (of the Knight Agency). You can see a list of all the wonderful attending agents and editors on the GCC site.

If you’ve always wanted to write, this is the conference for you.  Workshops are offered to suit every writing level–from beginning to the multi-published veterans.

Come join me for a conference at the beach! (And if you’re registering, hurry! Early bird registration rates end on 2/1.)

Thanks for letting me have my shout-out. 🙂

I get hooked…

Happy New Year!! I hope 2012 brings you only good things. 🙂

Do you ever go through moods in which you suddenly find yourself hooked on a certain type of TV show, a certain type of book–or even a certain type of food?

I do–I’m one of those people that can get hooked, and hooked fast.  If I read a book by an author that knocks me off my feet, well, then guess who is about to go into a reading frenzy as I buy up more of that author’s work?

And if I find a series on TV that just draws me right in, well, yep, guess who will go back and watch all the previous shows in that series (we’re talking several seasons–and, oh, yes,  Castle, I’m looking at you).

When I find something I like, I’m a happy girl.  I’m also a girl that can get hooked way, way too easily.

What about you? Do you get hooked on certain shows or books? Are you hooked on anything special right now?

What Do You Want?

If you could get any item that you wanted this holiday season, what would it be?  Don’t try to hold back. Don’t try to pick something inexpensive or something useful.  (When I used to ask my grandmother what she wanted for Christmas each year, she’d tell me, “Something I can use.” My response was always the same–“You can use things the rest of the year. Let’s get something fun!”

What is your “something fun” that you’d like to have?  Come on, there’s no reason not to make a Christmas wish list, right?  So pretend you’re a kid again. You can have anything…what would you want?

I’ll get things started…a Kindle Fire should would be awesome.  Wrapped up and decorated with a lovely red bow. A Kindle Fire loaded with all kinds of great reads, just waiting for me.

Now it’s your turn…what do you want?  Go ahead, make your holiday wish.

(And, psst…don’t forget…every time you comment at this blog, you’re entered for a chance to win a Kindle!)
