Rewriting Angels

Happy New Year! January 1st is such a day of hopes and dreams, and I hope that some of yours come into reality this year. Of course, they might need a little helping along – I don’t think you ought to wait for them, I think you should chase after… with a club if necessary!

Personally, I’m starting 2014 as I mean to go on – celebrating an imminent release. After nearly two years in drafts and endless edits, ARCHANGEL comes out Monday 6th January.

archangel-smI didn’t set out to write a story about angels. It was March 31st, 2012 and the Twitterverse was buzzing about ScriptFrenzy, a month-long challenge hosted by the same people that bring the world NaNoWriMo every November (ScriptFrenzy no longer runs, but has been replaced by Camp NaNo). I’d no idea. None. Okay, well the vaguest inclination to write an urban fantasy with a “different” kind of supernatural element, but nothing concrete.

Vampires? Done that. Wolves? Done to death. Ghosts? Meh. Angels? Hmm, wait.

There’s an NCIS: LA episode called “Archangel”. It’s not about angels. At all. It does, however, feature my TV crush, so I’d seen it. Fairly recently, in fact. He played a mercenary and my brain started down the “what if” rabbit hole. I didn’t want a hero. Heroes are dull. But an antihero? With an attitude and a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later? That I wanted. And so Gabriel Kemp was born.

Gabe is probably the least angelic angel you can imagine. A tough upbringing made him into a tough human being, and getting divine powers doesn’t change that. He’s a crook skimming through life with little interest in it. Responsibilities are something to avoid, problems are things to be shot. He’s no belief in heaven or hell, or even himself.

Most of that came from my own determination to write something other. Angels are usually pure and powerful, messengers of love and peace. Tidings of great joy and all that. Of the words I found to apply to angels, only one stuck for Gabe – protective. That realisation amused me so much, I used it to create the logline.

Patient. Merciful. Protective… One out of three ain’t bad.

That’s not just descriptive of Gabe, but of his attitude. Although he has no faith, he’s not without hope. He’s not quite as carefree as he pretends, but there is something transient about his soul. He’s looking for a place to be, and someone who’ll accept him as he is.

I think, to a large degree, that can be said of a lot of us.

It took me just twenty days to write the rough draft of ARCHANGEL and it was a wild ride. Most of the time I’d literally no idea what my next sentence was going to be. I wrote in first person and simply surrendered the reins to Gabe. He became very, very real and is still a character I love to death.

That’s probably down to the person I wrote the script for. I’d a very definite idea of who should play Gabe, and the story is largely a love letter to him. I even approached him for the cover, but costs proved to be prohibitive. Instead he gets the dedication.

Dream a little

Keira pretty much sums up why it’s so much fun writing m/m romance. Check out her blog post for some smoking hot pictures if you don’t believe me. 🙂

I love to combine m/m romance with paranormal/fantasy. Pretty much all has been said why we love to write paranormal/fantasy. It’s great fun to make up stuff without worrying about the laws of nature, science and physics—and creating new terms based on Latin roots and other languages. I’ve traveled to many sacred sites and I like to use these experiences in my stories. There’s magic in the world and fantasy and paranormal bring it to the surface. Who doesn’t want to believe that during another age vampires and shape shifters existed. Angels are with us. Elves roam the forests. And, there’s a genie in that strange lamp you just bought at a used garage sale!

We all love to dream and believe in the impossible.

I’ll leave you with  another smokin’ hot pic to enjoy! I can’t let Keira have all the fun. 🙂

Pride will be the death of him.

When psychic Nate Coleman dreams of a murder, he knows it’s a premonition. He can’t forget the image of his ex-lover with a bullet hole through his chest. Nate has no choice but to confront William and face the skeptical scientist’s ridicule.
Dr. William Ryner doesn’t believe in what he can’t prove. When Nate comes back into his life, it’s not to rekindle their love, but to bring up more of that mumbo jumbo that split them apart.

Despite William’s refusal to listen, Nate can’t ignore the premonition. And, William can’t ignore Nate. Before the gunman strikes, William must either trust in Nate’s ability or rely only on the facts, but if he does the latter, pride could be the death of him.

Devilish drinks for an angel

Shmokin Cocktail!I’m not much of a cook – just ask anyone in my family, and they would agree! So instead of food, I’m going to post two cocktails that I’m considering for my New Year’s Day party. Both of these drinks were inspired by one of my scenes in Sins of Lust – my paranormal m/m romance.

Now angels can’t hold Earth liquor too well, and Uri-el is no exception. And, I’m giving away a scene here so if you don’t want to read further… There’s a scene where Uri is at a bar and of course, being an otherworldly creature, the bartender is enamored with him. He insist on making him a drink called Angel Face. Yes, it’s really a cocktail I found on the Internet. Now Izar is irritated that the bartender can’t seem to take his eyes off of Uri and mutters that the appropriate drink for Uri is really a Devilish Daiquiri!

Here are the recipes for both of these wonderful concoctions!

Angel Face
(drink recipe from Diffords Guide: http://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/521/angel-face)

1 shot of dry gin
1 shot of calvados
1 shot of apricot brandy liqueur

Best glass to use: Martini glass and garnish with a very thin apples slice.

Hot Devilish Daquiri
(recipe from Drinks Mixer: http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink4333.html)

1 1/2 cup water
1/4 cup sugar 2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
6 oz frozen lemonade concentrate
6 oz frozen limeade concentrate
1/2 cup light rum

In 2 qt. microproof casserole, combine hot water, sugar, spices, and concentrated juices. Stir, then cook on HI 5-6 minutes or until mixture boils. Heat rum in microproof container on HI for 30 seconds. Ignite and pour over hot beverage. Ladle into punch cups for serving.

It’d be pretty cool to light the punch bowl on fire but be careful!

Thou shall not kill.

For archangel Razi-el, he had no choice. He would break God’s commandment again if it were to save Uri-el from a demon’s talons. Yet even God’s most trusted archangel cannot avoid punishment. No longer Razi-el, he is now Izar, a Protector sworn to kill for the angels.

When a Protector kills an angel, Izar is summoned to work alongside Uri-el to capture the killer. Izar is shocked when his bloodlust spikes hot for the archangel. He knows better than to go after forbidden fruit. Refusing to give in to temptation, he ignores his body’s tempestuous arousal for Uri-el until a heated argument turns his blood into molten lust.

As they rush to find the killer, their passion plays into the demon’s plan. Izar will have to make a choice between life and death if he is to save Uri-el again.

Trouble with Angels

“I don’t do first dates. I’ll meet at a coffee shop but forget dinner and a movie. I’d end up spilling my wine on my white dress or trip because I’m trying to impress by wearing high heels because, damn, I live in sandals and flats. And if I don’t like you, then there’s no way I want to sit for two hours in a dark movie theater, even if you buy me popcorn.”

“Are you through? You might want to catch your breath.”

I suspiciously eye this tall man standing in front of me. We had bumped into each other in the spiritual section of the book store and he dropped a copy of Escaping the Demon’s Bedroom. What the hell was THAT about?

The man is an advertisement for sin. He’s every woman’s wet dream –if you grew up with glam rock stars that were more beautiful than handsome, slender and androgynous.

“Then coffee it is.” He sweeps back his wavy hair and pointedly stares at me with those strange violet eyes.

Angel - BackA shiver runs down my spine at the seductive glance. As he walks pass I smell jasmine and musk. The cologne is an odd choice but I like it. I intently watch him as he leads me to the cafe conveniently located in back of the store. He almost glides, his feet barely touching the carpet.

“I’ll have a non-fat latte.” My voice sounds loud in the quiet atmosphere. We are the only two people in the place.

“Why don’t you indulge yourself?”

“Ah…” I look up at the menu board unable to think straight. I feel spacey. When he places his hand on my shoulder and leans in, his scent is wraps me in a blanket of warmth.

“Dark mocha with whipped cream.” He suggests.

I nod even though I don’t like sweet drinks.

He picks up the drinks from the counter and sets them on a nearby table by the window. I sit and stare at the whipped cream lusciously capping my cup. He scoops a dab cream with his finger and feeds me. The sweetness is especially satisfying, his taste intoxicating. His eyes captivate as they change colors as if a kaleidoscope. I want to do more than have coffee with this man.

I smile. “How about dinner and a movie afterwards.”

WTF? Now I’m asking him out. The devil has my tongue.

“Wonderful. Call me Gabri-el.”

Here’s a quick blurb on my upcoming release – Sins of Lust:

It’s Me, Sayde Grace with the Winner’s List

Hello everyone! I closed the contest during the wee hours of the morning. I am so excited to announce the winners which I will later in this post. I’ll post winners in two groups, check back later for the second group! Yes, I am being difficult! It’s just the way I roll 🙂 And you will learn I am totally full of bull and love picking around! You’ll either love me or hate me 🙂

The first order of business though is for me to introduce myself. After the scavenger hunt I am guessing you all realize that I also write a lot of stories about cowboys. Its true. I love writing stories about the west and handsome strong cowboys. But my first love as a reader came in the way of a demon. Being from the south, the Bible Belt, I was beyond shocked to find I loved reading about demons struggling to be good. I mean demons are bad!! Really bad, we aren’t supposed to cheer for them! On top of that, I was even more confused when I read my first novel where the evil vampire loved being the evil bad guy and I loved him for it. That is not supposed to happen right? Wrong, the guy was just such a good bad guy that I had to admire him!

After a few years of reading everything I could get my hands on(well romance wise) I began writing my own stories. The first ones sucked and I still struggle to keep the new stories from sucking, but I’ve managed somehow to become a published author. During the process I’ve found I’m a blender, no you can’t stick ice in my mouth and tap me on the head to grind it up. What I mean is that while some authors tend to write in one genre I write all over the place. I love blending my cowboys with demons or making my shifters vampires too! Creating new and exciting characters, settings, and worlds are just a few things I love about being a writer.

I enjoy writing paranormal stories because you can create so many different scenarios for your characters. In my latest series, Gabriel’s Army, a select group of angels and demons are led by the Angel Gabriel to harvest souls of the earths most wanted, good or evil beings. The angels and demons in this army must transport souls to the Haven where the souls are judged and sent to heaven or hell.  It’s all very dramatic at the Haven, because both want as many souls as they can get to tip the balance of the age old fight between good and evil.

To become a soldier in the elite army the angels and demons must first live as humans, born into the world with a soul until Gabriel comes for them. Oh the complications of being a human! Gabriel must take their humanity and soul when the time comes and take them from their life as humans. Each member loses the ability to feel human emotion so they can harvest souls without prejudice or remorse. But what happens when one soulless soldier is reminded of what it was to have a human life and be loved? What happens when he comes face to face with the woman he left behind and the child he never knew he had?

Being a blender, I made sure to bring my demon Kipling a little western flair. He’s an ex bull rider 🙂 and currently a soulless demon! His is the first in my series and I’m looking forward to bringing you many, many more sexy complicated stories.

But we all know what you want, the list of who won what!! I know, I’ve rambled on long enough about my new series, but I’m really excited dang it!! And I will post the answers along with the second group in the next few hours. I believe I have a picture coming from a pizza place and one of our authors. Ok, enough. Here you go:

Group A winners are:

Nicki who wins Kristin Miller’s Intervamption!

Danny who wins Sayde Grace’s Voodoo, I Do

Renee Bennett who won her choice of Erin Kellison’s Shadow series books.
