Definition of Diva: It’s All About Me

Good morning! Since we don’t have a theme for this week I am going to do some self-promoting. I don’t usually self-promote here, but many of you might not  know about me or my writing. First about me…hmm…I’m an Aries with a Cancer Moon and Virgo Rising. I’ve always walked to a different beat, and my husband tells me I think like 8% of the population! Now where he came up with that stat, I never figured out. But, he’s an engineer, so I don’t question. I love to travel and have visited most sacred sites across the globe. I spend a lot of time in coffee houses chatting with friends. Waste most of the afternoon hanging out and watching anime, reading, playing on my iPad…you know, nothing too constructive. But, I get up at 5:30 am every day and work until I crash!

In 2013, I almost gave up writing. I had several m/m books published and the industry was going through growing pains. I thought about starting something new and getting back to my art. Well I did start something new, a business with a wonderful friend and artist, teaching online classes, but I couldn’t give up writing all together.

In 2014, I had four books published.

Mostly, I write m/m romance but started as a m/f historical romance writer. These older books have been out of circulation for quite some time. I decided to republish two through Musa Publishing. It’s always nice to get a refresh on a story and a new editing job.

regardingeliza-200Regarding Eliza is my m/f Edwardian book  – and a fun story about Eliza, a young woman living during the 1910’s. This was quite a decade of change, much like the 1960’s – which is the other m/f story I have out – Formula For Love. Both stories feature strong, independent women who want to make a change in the world, and are trying to figure out how love fits in with their need for independence.

FortheBiteofIt_200On the m/m romance side, I have a new series, Orbus Arcana, co-authored with Vina Grey. This tells the story of Vince and John, a vampire in love with a human cop. The story leans towards a fantasy in the sense we have a lot of world building. Orbus Arcana exists alongside the human world but  in another dimension. We will soon have an audio book for the first book – For The Bite Of It and plan to have the second book converted to audio next year – A Bite In Time. Vina and I are working on book 3, and hope to have it published in April, 2015.

I’m not sure what 2015 will bring? Maybe another trip overseas, or a brand new series I’ll write with Vina. I learned to take things day to day, to enjoy my writing and not stress the details. Life is too short not to enjoy every minute of it!

Cheers,

Rewriting Romeo and Juliet

A homosexual couple, closeup of a body(kisses JULIET, takes out the poison)

Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide.

Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on

The dashing rocks thy seasick, weary bark.

Here’s to my love! (drinks the poison) O true apothecary,

Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.

Ah, and so end’s Romeo and Juliet. Now, this isn’t a favorite play of mine. I don’t like tragic endings in romance, that’s why I write in the romance genre and not women’s fiction. I want the HEA. The HEA might take a few books to get there, but rest assured, my heroes will be happy together, and not in death. So here’s how I would write the ending (and being predominately a m/m writer, I’m changing Juliet into Jules.)

(kisses JULES, takes out the poison)

Romeo stares at the ugly brown bottle. Did he really want to end his life? Yes, he loved Jules like no other, but it wasn’t as if they could marry. He’d have to do the deed sometime in the future.

He vehemently shook his head. With Jules he had no life, and the thought of taking a wife left a knot in his stomach.

“Bitter, bitter taste I will welcome. Here’s to my love. “

He uncapped the cork and the nasty whiff made him choke.

Jules stirred, sitting up on his elbows, rubbing his eyes. “Hey, Rom, what took you so long?”

Romeo gasped and dropped the bottle on the concrete floor. The glass smashed and released the foul odor.

Jules wrinkled his nose. “What the fuck is that stuff?”

“I thought you were dead?”

“Didn’t you get the message?”

Romeo’s heart pounded. He’d almost taken the vile poison, and all this time his lover was alive. “What message?”

“Man, you have the worst luck. I only pretended to die, idiot. Why would I kill myself? Tybalt is dead. Mecutio is dead. How many dead bodies do we need in this goddamn play?”

Romeo shrugged. “And Paris…”

“Geeze, man, is there anyone left alive?”

Romeo grinned, his eyes shining. “We are…so let’s make the best of it.”

Fade to black…

Ah, come on, this IS Shakespeare and he doesn’t do erotic romance!

Holy Heat, Batman!

BatmanHoly Heat! There’s enough of that generated by Batman aka Bruce Wayne.

I love Batman. He’s the ultimate alpha hero—handsome, rich, intelligent, brooding, muscular with a tender heart surrounded by a steel wall. He lets no one in but the very few people he can trust—Alfred, Robin, Superman and Wonder Woman. The trinity of three (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) make for a formidable team.

Batman has no superpowers, but he’s a survivor. With his exceptional fighting skill and the use of his innovative gadgets, he can stand side-by-side with any super hero. Ah. What I would give for him to swoop down on his bat-a-rang and scoop me up for one night of passion. 🙂

What is often overlooked is his amazing detective skills. He also has a super cool computer system hooked up to all sorts of data and impossible information only he can access! The ultimate, sexy nerd. How can anyone ignore an intelligent, impossibly sexy guy with a body sculpted of pure muscle?

Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner

FortheBiteofIt_200Vincent and John are coming to dinner. Not that I’m worried or anything, but Vince is quite the wine connoisseur, and can afford the best. Also he cooks and bakes a mean dessert. John is more the BBQ kind of guy. And, well, there’s one more little problem–Vincent is a vampire.

I don’t really wish to become Vincent’s dessert. Not that he’d take advantage of his dinner host. He’s the ultimate gentleman, and gay, so he’d prefer a bite of the male persuasion. He’d prefer John, but John has no clue his lover drinks blood. Really!? He’s been with Vincent, for how long now?

Okay, back to dinner. What to serve?

I’m from the Central Valley (California). My family is still there, and lives close to Lodi, an award winning wine valley that produces some of the finest Zinfandel varieties. A bottle of Lodi vintage should pacify the wine beast.

I’m going to keep the menu simple, and with John in mind. He’s a basic kind of guy, not fancy but likes good quality without fuss. Hah, look at his gorgeous partner…

Wine: Klinker Brick Old Ghost Zinfandel – comes from 100 year old vines

Menu:

Steak filets – cooked medium rare (some blood to satisfy the craving)

Russet baked potatoes served with sour cream, chives and butter

Fresh salad with my own vinaigrette dressing

Fresh fruit and whipped cream spiked with a bit of Amaretto

Too Hot To Think, Need A Drink

stgermain-bottle-koI’m not much of a cook, but I love a refreshing cocktail, especially when the temperature hits over 110 degrees. Last year I discovered St. Germain, a french liqueur made from elderflowers. It has bright, floral notes, perfect for a sunny day.

The elderflower has small, starry flowers that bloom in the spring and summer. The flowers are harvested on the slopes of the French Alps, which in my mind, is very cool and romantic!

There are several cocktails made with St. Germain, but I keep it simple:

Glass of Ice

Shot of St. Germain

Shot of Champagne – sparkling wine

Spring of Mint

Cheers!

Why So Evil?

Evil minions are not people I normally think about. Yeah, well, bad people exist and make for a great story. But, I don’t want to like the evil minion, or root for him in any way. If I’m emotionally attached to the E.M., it’s too sad when he gets what he deserves. I’m old fashion that way. I grew up when the good guys wore white hats. If there has to be a ‘bad guy/gal’, then I want to have no doubt that this person deserves his wicked fate.

But sometimes I’m surprised by the fate of an E.M. It’s a well known factoid that in writing great evil characters, there needs to be a ‘soft’ side to the character. Or, a believable motivation why the character is so evil. I admit that when Darth Vadar was unmasked, it shocked me how gentle he looked. My heart went out to him, and I was happy to see him back to his ‘old self’ standing alongside Obi Wan and Yoda. From purely detesting Darth Vadar for three movies, in the last few seconds of the third film, I had a change of heart. That’s a great E.M.

Love and Peace!

Big Bang Buddies

431312My favorite sidekick. Hmm. That’s a hard one.

I’m really into the Big Bang Theory. I’d say the friends of Sheldon are the sidekicks!

And, those wonderful friends soften Sheldon and make him a little more human.

I love this show. Maybe because I can relate to the characters. They seem to have so much fun doing those nerdy things that they do. I want to play games with them, go to the comic store and dress up for a Star Trek convention. Just hang out with the boys.

Thinking about my books, I’d say Angelo is a sidekick to Vincent in the Orbus Arcana series. In Formula For Love, Gayle is Rose’s sidekick. Friends that stick together, no matter what.

Love and Peace,

Formula For Love

Kenneth believes everything—even love—can be solved logically, until he meets a flower child who challenges him at every turn

Kenneth Hailey, an uptight conservative mathematician, believes he’s in control. After all, every problem can be solved in a deliberate and logical manner. Even love. When his fiancée dumps him for his best friend, he leaves Manhattan for the West Coast. What better place to forget his past. It’s 1967, and San Francisco is the place to turn on, tune in, and drop out.

But is he ready for Rose Red?

Rose Red, a free-spirited flower child, challenges Kenneth, thrusting him into her world of love-ins, protest rallies, and rock concerts. Kenneth finds himself falling down a rabbit hole, hanging on for dear life.

Old habits die hard, and he retreats, but Rose Red has other plans for him.

Excerpt: Formula For Love, copyright 2014, Viki Lyn

Rose patted his hand. “Forget it. You already said too much. You think girls don’t have the brains for math. We’re too emotional for such discipline. So do you want to sleep with me?”

Kenneth choked, and a spray of coffee spurted across the table, barely missing Rose. He wiped up the mess with his napkin, while muttering an apology. “I might be behind the times, but I like to be the one to invite the girl to bed.”

“If I waited for you to make the first move we’d never get past first base.”

“There’s the unwritten teacher-student rule.”

“You said our paths would never cross, so why worry about it? Do you always follow the rules? We can bend them a little. I’m not talking about a relationship here.”

“You’re talking about loving the one you’re with.” He smiled at himself for using her phrase. The sunlight broke through the window and Rose’s hair shone a burnished copper. Luscious, silky hair he’d like to touch again. “What do you mean by bend?”

“We can sleep together, and since we’re not looking for love, and we’re not each other’s type, and don’t want to—”

“—form any attachments.”

Rose sat back and crossed her arms. “Are you going to let me finish my sentence?”

Kenneth sank in his chair, uncomfortable with the conversation, but riveted.

“Yes, since we don’t want any attachments,” she continued, “it would be ideal. What do you say?”

He scratched his chin. “So I’m going to love the one I’m with after all? I don’t know.”

Rose waved off Kenneth’s worried expression. “Sex can be fantastic, and I’m horny, been without it—”

“—for a day?”

Nail Biting Time

The days are counting down. In a couple of weeks I will be uploading my first self-published book. A series I’m writing with co-author Vina Grey – m/m vampire love story set in the Orbus Arcana world. The first book was published over two years ago. We got our rights back from the publisher because we wanted to go in a different direction with the series. To do that we had to rewrite a few scenes, develop the vampire world, and change the ending of the first book. We have since finished the second book of the series and are writing the third book.

FortheBiteofIt_200I love my publishers, and I’m not planning on strictly going the self-published route. I think it’s good to spread into different areas of publishing and have more than one publishing outlet.

It was much easier and less stressful to self-publish having a partner – because it’s a lot of work! We hired Winter Heart Designs to do our covers – and Lex was amazing! There are the ISBN numbers you need to purchase if you want control over who contacts you. And, not to mention getting the book ready for uploading to all the different sites. Again, we hired out this portion as well.

We were determined to put out a clean, professional product – and we spent many hours editing and editing and editing. Even with all of our blood, sweat and tears going into making a decent book, we need to market and get the word out. That’s a given for any book, no matter if you go with a publisher or do it yourself.

Still, it’s exciting and nail biting when a new book is released. Will it be a success? Will my readers enjoy it? Time will tell and life is an adventure so you might as well take a risk!

Love and Peace!

Year of the Horse

iStock_000022236682SmallLast year I pretty much stopped writing. I had a free short I wrote for Musa, but that was about it. I needed a break and I took it. Go forward a few months, and usher in the Year Of The Horse, and wham – I find myself in a ocean of edits for two books coming out soon – Formula for Love and For The Bite Of It.

(Yeah, the pic, right, it has nothing to do with the Horse. 🙂 – but he’s nice, isn’t he!)

I love esoteric stuff – tarot, astrology, symbolism, numerology —- so I was interested in what the Chinese say about their Year of the Horse:

Year of the Horse began on January 30 on the New Moon.

Grip the reins because it’s a year of fast victories, unexpected adventures, and surprising romance. Ooh la la.

Energy is high and productive – and I find this is true for me. I have three major projects that are all culminating in March – two new books and a new online creativity class I’ve created with my wonderful artist friend.

If you want success, then decisive action is needed, not procrastination – oops, well, I’ll work on that.

Under the Horse there is no middle ground! Globally expect chaos.

So hang onto your hats for one wild ride.

Peace and Love

Be My Valentine

5327816008_d3189e1a8c_nI find it ironic that I’m not into Valentine’s Day, be it that I write romance. Some of my characters are much more into it – the more romantic being Skye, Ryan and John from Woodland Village. Their partners are either too pragmatic or too busy to think about what day it is…

Skye is an artist and has a creative and sensitive soul, and he is not afraid to display his emotions. His partner Drew is reserved and keeps his emotions close to his chest – so he’d have a difficult time with Valentine’s Day. The best he’d come up with is taking Skye out to dinner to a nice restaurant with an elegant and quiet atmosphere. I’d bet he’d skip on the present and rely on a card for his sentiment.

Skye on the other hand would give Drew something personal. Perhaps he’d create a painting for Drew’s office. Or frame a photograph of the two of them when they were relaxed and happy . It would be a reminder for Drew to stop and just what life has to offer!

Ryan is opposite of his brother Drew. He lives large and is not afraid to show how much he cares for Martin. He’d plan a weekend in New York, booking rooms into The Four Seasons hotel. They’d have dinner at One If By Land, Two If By Sea (since it’s romantic and has a ‘ocean’ theme) – a bit stuffy but Ryan would get a kick out of flaunting his relationship with Martin in front of stuffy New Yorkers.

Martin would get a tattoo where only Ryan could see it. 🙂

John is the romantic of the duo. Scott doesn’t like big crowds. He prefers to be in the background without attention focused on him. John is aware of this and would plan accordingly. He would take Martin to a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains where they would have alone time together. Scott’s present would be giving all his attention to John and not once turning on his laptop to write!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
